Why did life expectancy go up during the Industrial Revolution?

It actually went down a little, as people crowded into cities and slums were built, from the filthy conditions and crowding. It wasn't until the late 19th century that attention to clean water and sewage control began the upward trend in life expectancy we see continuing today.
