How does a semi-automatic car work?

in a semi-automatic car, when you put into mode where when only you want to change gears does it change gears automatically iff ur reving ur car to high?, just say if someone was doing a burnout or in a straight line in 1st gear doing like 5,000 revs will it change gears automatically? or will it stay in the same gear like a normal manual?
